In this video, a found object seemingly ‘performs’ for the audience in more ways than one.
After finding the work and capturing the video, I began to think about the way the dashboard Hula-girl object performs preconceptions of gender as well as cultural stereotypes (albeit whitewashed). To highlight these assumptions, I juxtaposed the movement of the hips to the sound of a swinging “torture” pendulum, which lends an air of unease to what would be an overlooked object. With this piece, I began to think about the idea of performance work by non-living performers or proxies which is something I plan to continue to explore.
Glitches that occurred accidentally in the video were then embraced and emphasized–replicating them in order to further a feeling of disruption.
